A position now exists for a Design Engineer. Our client is one of the leading developers of technology to generate electricity from tidal streams. They are currently designing and building a 500kW prototype device for installation at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney. They are working closely with Rolls-Royce both as a technology partner and an investor, and International Power as lead customer. The company plans to have a commercial product available around 2012.
This is an opportunity for a Design Engineer to play a key role in the development of a new renewable energy technology, taking it from early prototypes through to commercial farms. You will be joining a small but expanding team with the backing of a major corporate and opportunities for career development as the company grows.
The Person
Our client is seeking a keen, well-motivated Design Engineer, willing to take responsibility for his/her areas of work. They should be capable of working in team, communicating well with colleagues, suppliers and external organisations. The candidates should have a thorough grounding in mechanical engineering, and be qualified to degree or HND level. We are looking for candidates with five or more years’ experience in industry, with a preference for relevant experience, such as marine or offshore engineering, renewable energy, large structures, geared transmissions, or hydraulic systems. A practical, hands-on approach to design and machine development is required.
The Role
The work will involve:
• System and component design, using 3D CAD and FEA,
• Application of design codes and standards,
• Production of manufacturing drawings and parts lists,
• Preparation of specifications and tendering,
• Supervision of suppliers and manufacturers,
• Assisting in assembly, testing and operation of prototypes.
The Design Engineer will report to one of the Lead Engineers in the engineering team.
The position is a permanent post based in our client’s office is South West England, although the candidate will be expected to travel to

sites for periods of assembly, commissioning and testing.
